A Superb Value from Bordeaux
Chateau D’Arvigny sells for £14.47 in London. Roughly calculated, that’s $28.00. Occasionally, there is inflation that one can easily account for. First growths, for instance, the name brand super seconds and some of the better-known (and formerly value priced) third and fourth growths have been snapped up by the burgeoning Asian market at such a rate that we poor Americans are left holding our withering dollars wondering why the Bordeauxlais, so recently delighted to see us, are capping our quotas.
It is delightful, then, to occasionally find a wine no one’s paying attention to. The Chateau D’Arvigny 2009 is just such a wine. Second label for Chateau Beaumont (Haut Medoc Cru Bourgeois), the 2009 D’Arvigny is exhibiting all the characteristics that make second wines so appealing in their youth. The blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc is medium bodied and the nose enticing. On the palette, notes of cigar box and black current.
The finish is good but not lingering. Wait for it though - before disappearing altogether, there is just the slightest hint of lavender water.
Easy on the mouth and easy on the pocket book at $16.99/bottle or $156.00/case
